The New and James Rivers are located about an hour apart. While the New currently holds the state record 45lb 8oz monster caught in June of 2007 and spits out the majority of citations (40" or bigger) registered each year with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, the James River is closing the gap quickly.
Why Come South? Simply put, you can effectively chase muskies all year long! There are no closed seasons, and the rivers hardly ever freeze over. Better yet, one of the absolute peak times for Southern Muskies are the winter months of Dec thru early-March. Add in the fact that we are fishing over 100 miles of two trophy rivers within an hour of each other, Southern Musky Guide Service is on top of some great river musky action!
Why fish with SMGS? Britt Stoudenmire is one of the most persistent and hardest working river musky guides in the south. A full time fishing guide for the last fifteen years, Britt has spent countless hours, days, years on the New and James Rivers hunting big fish on both conventional and fly gear while continually putting clients on big fish.
2019 Winter Fish
New River Report
2019 Winter Update - I can't believe it is already mid-Jan & there is only about 1.5 months left in our winter season. It has been smokin' hot from the start, & we've been blessed to put 26 fish in my boat the last 11 days out. And these aren't your average fish. 20 of these fish have been 40" into the way upper-40's and heavy. The days of the "stick" fish seem to be over, at least for now, and the new slot limit seems to be doing its job nicely. The winter musky season only rolls around once a year, and I've got a few open dates left. I love to share my enthusiasm for these fish with my clients, and if you can stand my stories and a few big fish in between, then give us a ring. 540-921-7438.
Musky Hunter Magazine - Britt's article, Virginia's Musky Turnpike, was printed in Musky Hunter Magazine and focuses on various successful patterns for each season on the New and James Rivers. If you fish these rivers, or rivers in general, please make sure to check it out.
Musky Talk Newsletter - Don't miss Britt's Musky Talk Newsletter featuring the most current fishing reports, upcoming bites, "can't miss" lure profiles, and anything else "musky-wise" you may be interested in. Please click here to sign up, we'd love to have you.
